If you’ve ever said…
“I’m just going to have one”
…and then found yourself pouring another, you’re not alone.
And more importantly…
You’re not lacking willpower.
There’s actually something happening in your brain after that first drink that makes stopping harder than it should be.
The moment you take your first sip, your brain chemistry begins to change.
Dopamine, your brain’s reward chemical, spikes.
Your brain registers:
“This feels good. Let’s do that again.”
At the same time:
• Your inhibitions go down
• Your logical thinking decreases
• Your desire for more increases
So the decision you make after drink one…
Is not the same decision you made before it.
This is where it gets frustrating.
You had every intention of sticking to one.
But your brain?
It’s now chasing reward.
Alcohol creates a loop:
Relief → reward → desire → repeat
And the more often you repeat that loop, the stronger it becomes.
Over time, your body adapts.
What used to feel like enough… isn’t anymore.
This is called tolerance.
And while it might seem like a “good” thing…
It actually means your body now needs more alcohol to feel the same effect.
Which increases:
• Consumption
• Cravings
• Dependence
Here’s the truth:
You’re not weak.
You’re not broken.
You’re responding exactly how your brain is wired to respond to an addictive substance.
Alcohol doesn’t just relax you.
It changes your brain’s chemistry in real time.
If stopping after one feels impossible…
That’s because the most important decision isn’t after the first drink.
It’s before it.
The easiest drink to say no to…
Is the first one.
Instead of relying on willpower in the moment, you can prepare ahead of time.
Jenn teaches this as the 3 Ps:
1. Pre-decide
Make the decision before you’re in the environment.
2. Pre-plan
Know what you’ll drink, say, or do instead.
3. Play the movie forward
Be honest about what happens after one drink.
Not the ideal version.
The real version.
Most drinking habits run on autopilot.
Same time.
Same place.
Same pattern.
But the moment you bring awareness in…
You interrupt the loop.
And that’s where change begins.
You don’t have to keep repeating the same cycle.
You don’t have to rely on willpower.
And you don’t have to figure it out alone.
Start simple.
Tonight, before you pour a drink…
Pause.
Ask yourself:
“What happens after the first one?”
