How to Stay Alcohol-Free This Summer Without Feeling Left Out

How to Stay Alcohol-Free This Summer Without Feeling Left Out

Summer Can Feel Like One Long Drinking Event

Pool days.

Patios.

Vacations.

Boats.

Barbecues.

Rosé all day culture.

If summer already has you wondering how you’re going to “handle” drinking season, you are not alone.

For many women, summer feels harder.

Not because they suddenly lost motivation.

But because the environment changes.

There are more events.

More social pressure.

More opportunities to drink.

More moments tied to alcohol.

And if you’re sober curious or trying to drink less, summer can start feeling like one giant trigger.

But here’s the good news:

You do not need more pressure this summer.

You need a plan.

Why Summer Feels More Triggering

Summer often disrupts routines.

Kids are home.

Schedules change.

Vacations happen.

People gather more often.

The days feel looser and less structured.

And for many women, drinking becomes woven into those experiences.

Poolside drinks.

Vacation cocktails.

Patio wine nights.

Beach beers.

Over time, your brain starts associating alcohol with:

- fun

- relaxation

- connection

- reward

- celebration

That’s why cravings can feel stronger in summer.

It’s not “just you.”

Your environment matters.

Your Brain Will Choose What’s Familiar

One of the biggest mistakes women make?

Waiting until they arrive at the event to decide whether or not they’ll drink.

Jenn explains it this way:

If you walk into a social situation without a plan, your brain will default to what feels familiar.

And for many women, familiar equals drinking.

Because the brain is wired to:

- conserve energy

- avoid discomfort

- repeat familiar patterns

So if drinking has always been part of:

- pool days

- vacations

- social events

- summer evenings

your brain will naturally pull you toward it.

Why “Maybe” Usually Turns Into Yes

Jenn shares something powerful in this workshop:

If she walked into a party “on the fence” about drinking…

she almost always ended up drinking.

Because in-the-moment decisions are emotional decisions.

Add:

- stress

- social anxiety

- peer pressure

- decision fatigue

- celebration energy

…and suddenly “just one” sounds very appealing.

That’s why pre-deciding matters.

You Don’t Need More Willpower

You need preparation.

This is where the “3 Ps” come in:

- Pre-decide

- Pre-plan

- Prepare instead of react

These small shifts remove so much pressure from your brain.

Pre-Decide Before You Go

Don’t wait until you’re standing at the bar.

Decide beforehand:

- what you want

- how you want to feel

- how you want tomorrow morning to feel

- what aligns with your goals

This creates simplicity.

And simplicity creates peace.

Bring Your Own Beverage

Summer is actually one of the easiest times to bring alcohol-free alternatives.

BYOB can become:

“Bring Your Own Beverage.”

There are now incredible:

- NA beers

- zero-proof cocktails

- sparkling drinks

- mocktails

And honestly?

Sometimes what women miss most is:

- the ritual

- the association

- the experience

Not necessarily the alcohol itself.

Have a Plan for Social Pressure

One reason women drink socially?

They don’t know what to say.

Jenn encourages women to prepare simple responses ahead of time.

Her favorite?

“Yes, I’d love some water.”

Confident.

Simple.

Positive.

You do not owe anyone an explanation.

Alcohol is one of the only substances people feel pressured to justify not taking.

But you do not need permission to choose differently.

Have an Exit Plan

This one matters more than people realize.

Jenn shares that she often:

- arrives on time

- connects intentionally

- leaves early

Because as events go on, the drinking usually escalates.

And honestly?

You are allowed to leave.

You are even allowed to skip events completely if you need to.

That’s not failure.

That’s self-awareness.

Alcohol Isn’t Actually Helping Anxiety

Many women believe alcohol helps them relax.

Jenn believed that too.

Until she learned what alcohol was actually doing biologically.

Alcohol increases cortisol levels.

It disrupts sleep.

It increases anxiety afterward.

Which means many women are drinking to reduce stress…

while alcohol quietly increases it.

You Are Not Broken

This workshop reminds women of something important:

You are not broken.

Your patterns may simply need updating.

Because alcohol has been heavily marketed as:

- fun

- relaxing

- harmless

- rewarding

But marketing is not reality.

And once you start questioning the narrative around alcohol, everything begins to shift.

You Don’t Need More Pressure This Summer

You need:

- support

- awareness

- preparation

- connection

- a plan

That’s what creates confidence.

Not perfection.
